A home with a story

Built by our family. Shared with yours.

The Fishing Shack is more than a vacation rental to us. Our family built it with our own hands, and it has been part of our family story for years. We love the simple pleasures here: morning coffee on the river deck, fishing until the light begins to fade, and soaking beneath a Montana sky full of stars.

Whether you come for world-class fishing, a Yellowstone adventure, or a few peaceful days beside the river, we hope you feel at home here and make memories of your own.

A little local knowledge

The Fishing Shack guide to the Madison Valley

We’ve gathered a few of our family’s favorite places and experiences to help you plan your time in southwest Montana. Check seasonal hours and current conditions before setting out.

From Yellowstone and historic Virginia City to fishing the Madison, soaking at Norris Hot Springs, or exploring Cliff and Wade Lakes, there’s plenty to discover beyond the cabin.

River safety: The Madison can be deceptively powerful. Children should never be unattended near the river, and we recommend getting current local advice before attempting a float trip.

Before you arrive

A few things to know before your Montana trip

Because the Fishing Shack is a peaceful riverfront home rather than a town hotel, a little planning makes your stay easier.

Stock up on groceries

Ennis and West Yellowstone have many of the area's grocery stores, restaurants, and gas stations. We recommend shopping before you arrive.

Pack layers

Montana weather can change quickly, even in summer. Bring layers and a light jacket, along with a bathing suit for the hot tub or nearby hot springs.

Plan your drive

Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport is approximately 1.5 hours away; Yellowstone Airport is closer but has more limited service. Check your route and travel time before departure.

Know the amenities

The home has forced-air heating but no air conditioning. Wi-Fi is available, and cellular reception varies by carrier.

Fishing preparation

Fishing gear is not supplied. Check current Montana license requirements and regulations, and ask locally about conditions before a float.
