The Fishing Shack Guide to the Madison Valley

One of the best parts of staying at the Fishing Shack is having so much of southwest Montana to explore—and a peaceful riverfront home to return to afterward. These are a few of our family’s favorite ideas.

Travel times are approximate. Seasonal hours, road conditions, access, and activity availability can change, so confirm details directly before you head out.

Yellowstone National Park

The West Entrance is about a 35-minute drive from the cabin, depending on conditions. Allow a full day for exploring, check current park alerts, and plan for traffic and wildlife delays.

Ennis & West Yellowstone

These are the main nearby towns for groceries, restaurants, gas, and visitor services. We recommend picking up groceries before arriving at the cabin.

Historic Virginia City

A preserved Montana mining town with historic buildings, shops, and a classic Old West atmosphere. It makes a nice outing from Ennis.

Madison River fishing

The Madison is famous for fly fishing, and guests can fish from the property. Fishing gear is not provided, so bring your own equipment and check current Montana licensing and regulations.

Guided trips & river floats

Guided fishing and floating options may be available through local outfitters. Ask for current local advice about flows, access, and safety before planning a float.

Cliff & Wade Lakes

These scenic mountain lakes make a worthwhile excursion when conditions and access allow. Check current road and lake information before you go.

Norris Hot Springs

A favorite regional stop for soaking and, seasonally, food and live music. Check its official current schedule before making the drive.

Hiking & wildlife

There are hiking opportunities in the surrounding area. This is bear country: follow current Forest Service guidance, carry appropriate bear-safety equipment, and never approach wildlife.

Family-friendly outings

Depending on the season, consider the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center, local theater, horseback riding, rafting, or other activities in the Ennis and West Yellowstone areas.

Local food & simple pleasures

We enjoy the Grizzly Bar and Grill near the cabin, breakfast at Campfire Lodge, antique shopping in Ennis, and—of course—morning coffee on the river deck.

River safety matters.

The Madison can be deceptively powerful. Children should never be unattended near the river. Do not attempt a float without suitable experience and current local guidance; conditions can change quickly.
